I have been really trying to limit the number of gallery shows I take on each year because they are so time consuming... I have to fight my tendency to say yes to everything because I'm so excited about the possibilities. But I know it's not good for me because I think that the good art comes when you have just a little space around you. (And twice this year my yesses ended badly because I had to drop out of two shows and felt TERRIBLE about it. gulp.) I also tend to procrastinate when it comes to gallery work because sure... there's a due date for when you have to get it to the gallery. But it always feels like decades away. And there are things due tomorrow that require immediate attention.
But not this time. I am doing my first solo show (!) in September and I am very excited. (and a little nervous... will people show up? a solo show is SO much work!) But I have already started on the work for it. (yay me!) I was thinking about posting them here as I finish them to kind of give me someone to answer to. You know? A visual look at progress made that acts as incentive to keep going. (So if I start slacking on posting more work, yell at me please!)
I was really discouraged a few weeks ago because I didn't know what i wanted to do with my personal work. Or at least, I didn't think I did. Colin and I talked about it for a while and he said something that just clicked for me. (A "click moment" where everything that's hazy seems to crystallize... love those!) He was finally able to put words to my work that made it feel cohesive and directional. He said: "you usually seem to draw people that somehow connect or are one with nature."
Um. Yes! That's so true! (Check out past pieces...)
And while that statement is not always the case, it felt like I suddenly had a clear path to walk down.
Thank you so much Colin!
So, with that direction in mind, I completed the piece below for that show... untitled as of yet... The ocean as a woman. Or the woman as part of the ocean. Not sure, but I like it anyhow.
(approx 19"x29", mixed media on paper)
Second piece coming soon...
